AN ALL NEW START FOR OUR COMMUNITY preview

It was during 1974/75 still under the struggling years of apartheid, government rezone this area called Strandfontein stretching from Spine Rd to Punt Rd and Admiral’s Hill to Strandfontein Rd, from a nature reserve consisting from fynbos and sand dunes for housing for middle class income bracket families. In 1976 the first houses which consist of single free standing and semi attached houses it was March the first residents moved in mostly from the sub economic areas like Hanover Park, Mannenberg Bonteheuwel and surrounding Athlone areas to establish a better life for their families away from the crime and gangsterism.

The first show houses was in Pilot Way then Salmon Way, Manta and Herring Ways followed by Dennegeurllaan,Trout and Dagerraad way. The private residentialsites were in Tunny and Marlin Crescents and Clipper Rd. Of the first families to move in were the De Bruynes and the Isaacs families.Strandfontein was develop section by section as stipulated above, Spine Rd was gravelled from Strandfontein Rd to Pilot Waytotravelled toMitchell Plain for trains and busses and supermarket chainsone have to go via Baden Powell Rd. When residents wanted to view their houses they had to parked on Spine Rd and walked over sand dunes and roads unlike now where they service areas with roads first.

With no infra structures all communities have to make use of the Strandfontein High School for a primary school, churches and mosque and madrassa. Mobiles  shop were doing their rounds in the early morning, afternoons and in the evenings to serviced area with milk and essentials.

St Frances was the first church which was used as clinic and other amenities like crèches etc. In 1979 we got our first bus stop in Weltevreden Rd, first corner shop and butcher called Tanweers on the cnr Manta and Salmon Way, and primary school then the spiritual needs were then accommodated by the two school the Muslims was accommodated in the primary school. It was trying times for them to set up every night during their fast of month of Ramadaan by clearing benches and relaying sound this lasted two years until 1981 where the communities hall became available that year and the next year 1982 they have to make use of a tent which was a disaster which was cold and flooded every night from 1983 they made use of the Ryland family’s home for five years until 1986 where found their own home of worship.

The Strandfontein community are grateful to the two doctors who settled practices with their consulting rooms in 1979Doctors Lalloo and Maroney in Schooner close and Clipper close. Also in 1989/90 Strandfontein was blessed with another supermarket and a filling station.
