SCOUTS – Strandfontein-village, South
Africa…Creating a better Community
On “Meet Your Neighbour day” I learned about one of the
oldest organisations in Strandfontein-village, our beloved Scouts. What is
scouting? SCOUTS South Africa is an independent, non-profit educational
movement dedicated to the development of young people in achieving their full
potential as individuals and responsible citizens.
Central in this programme is a continuous transference of
values such as honesty, loyalty, responsibility, respect; all aimed at
governing individuals’ behaviour and the development of strong leadership
skills that will equip members to be of service to others and to their
community.
I can only support this worthy cause but I’d like to
encourage responsible parents to get their kids involved, get them empowered,
involved, being adventurous! Uplift our community. Few reasons to join is its
an alternative to drugs & gangsterism; their got training in leadership,
camping, hiking, various useful skills; Uplifting our community, eradicate
gangsterism and compliments the schools in our Ward.
The aim is to develop their character, train them in
citizenship and develop their spiritual, social, intellectual and physical
qualities. Youth is always saying there’s nothing to do in the Ward but we got
a lot of organisation and clubs in the area, we just need some facilities.
The method…The Scout uniform; Leadership responsibilities;
The Great outdoor; personal qualities; The patrol and group systems; a
progressive advancement programme and
service to others. The scout method is the way we work. This is a system of
progressive self-education. Scouting is based on a Promise and a Law. It
usually takes place out doors and is based on the concept of “learning by
doing”.
I’m hoping that our community will visit and join…as cubs or
scouts;
Cubs: girls and boys from 7-10
Scouts: girls and boys from 10-17
Adults Leaders: Men and Women from 18+
Chantal steers represents our community, there’s a website; www.scouting.org.za or visit
Strandfontein Scout Facebook.
