Who is/are your biggest influence?
Throughout my school career and studies I
have had a various influences, these include
my parents, Glenda and John Palm and family
members. My family have been
extremely supportive and have
allowed me to explore
horizons.Radio personality
Saskia Falken, has been my
mentor for five years and she
has been absolutely fantastic,
her passion and enthusiasm
have influenced me positively.
What do you think is the
biggest issue facing women
of any/your age today?
Women face a range of
challenges, these include;
equality in the workplace and
sexual violence against
women.
Who are your ideal female
icons?
I have always liked Jennifer Lopez
whilst growing up. She is a great performer
as she is able to sing, dance and act.
Then, active women I encounter in my job
inspire me I see them as icons. These women
include community workers who fight crime and
domestic violence. Their genuine love for the
community and aspiration to fight the social ills in
Strandfontein and Mitchell’s Plain gives me great
joy.
Do you think there’s equality between men
and women in your workplace? Yes definitely,
it is wonderful to see gender equality being exercised
in the newsroom.
Do you think a female president would be
any different than a male? Why and how?
Despite the gender, if you are able to do the job
correctly and genuinely care about the people of
the country then you are a good president.
Do you think it’s important to have a Women’s
Day?
Yes, it is important to as women have made a
posi- tive impact in our society. It
is also important to highlight
the hard work and
sacrifices made by women.
What do you consider
‘female’ attributes?
Strong, compassionate,
hardworking and of course
we able to multitask.
You are an inspiration
to women in our
community, how
important is it for you to
be a positive role model?
Be real, follow your heart and make your
dream a reality – we all are role models if you
accomplish the above. It’s important to have
positive role models in our society as they are a
powerful source for learning and assist in realising
your potential and achieving it.
You have cemented quite an amazing life for
yourself, what do you think was the magic
ingredient to get you to where you are today?
Optimism and encouragement. My goal was to
work in the media industry and I am blessed that
I am working at a reputable newspaper today. I
am 22 years old and I have learnt so much in my
job and personally. I feel that I have so much to
learn and I am excited about the journey ahead.
What is the driving force behind everything
you do…what keeps you motivated and driven
on a daily basis?
Sacrifices made by ordinary people – they keep
me motivated. Telling the stories of people keeps
me motivated. Teachers, policeman, actors,
nurses, former drug addicts and gangsters,
community workers and the list goes on. Writing
about their achievements and challenges – their
life keeps me inspired.
I have learnt so much in journalism – journalism
is the University of Life.
What has been the biggest setback that
you’ve had to overcome in your journey?
What has it taught you?
Negative people. I have realised that negative
energy and surroundings could influence your
decisions and you might lose direction. I have
learnt to pretend to be deaf when negativity
comes along and maintain my enthusiasm and
focus.
In your success… what has been the best
advice you have ever been given?
If you are going through hell, keep going.
What’s next on your to conquer list?
To work hard and strive for excellence. I believe
that the sky is the limit.
Do you have any advice to the women who
are on their own brave active journey (starting
their own business, aspiring professional
athlete etc.)
We all have a goal, but some of us are scared to
go for it because others have failed. Never give
up, believe in yourself and in your dreams and
